Ahoy hoy, fellow purveyors of adventure and mayhem, seekers of wisdom and lore!
Today’s post is just for you! Ever wonder how you can help out your Game Master or
get more out of the campaign you’re in? Wonder no more! This is part one of our series
and we’ve got some great tips for you.
Tip 1, share you’re creativity!
An no, we don’t mean that you need to get a mindflayer on board to suck it
straight out of your skull, haha. To put it simply, take the time to build a bit of
backstory and depth into your character. You don’t need to write a novel about
them, but having a bit of history and a few “life goals” for your character provides
plot hooks that the GM can use to liven up the side quests and overarching story
in the campaign.
Tip 2, don’t be afraid to explore the world and interact with the NPCs you run into!
Your GM put a lot of thought and effort into the world building of this campaign
and half the fun of the adventure is actually adventuring! See if that haggard
family waiting in line next to you are in need of assistance or maybe even a bit of
coin. Go plant that field of wheat, or maybe burn another field down.
Each decision you make adds depth to the story and helps the GM craft a more
personalized adventure to your group. Who knows what consequences, good or
bad, you’ll see unfold as you take risks and help/harm those around you.
Tip 3, be a team player!
Mr. Lonely McLoner is not a terribly fun character to engage with in a group
setting like role-playing. Yes, you can try to do it all on your own, but why? You
cut out so much of the color and fun when you don’t collaborate with the other
players or engage with the NPCs that your GM has taken the time to build.
Tip 4, don’t be afraid to share your ideas with the GM!
Your ideas can help them design particular side-quests or even a
location/town/city particular to you or your characters. And the synergy of player
and Game Master collaboration will carry through the campaign, making it an
even richer experience.
